It’s Always Winter in America
A reminder that people have been left freezing out in the cold for years while some are just waking to the ice age.

The 21st century has been plagued with a series of unprecedented events since its start. However, nothing about current circumstances fit that description. From the stripping of civil rights to military occupation of cities, none of it is unheard of… especially in America.
The current administration has done everything in its power to alienate anyone who does not fit their “ideal America”. Many people have been comparing the present climate to that of Nazi Germany, but it is time that people reconcile that Nazi Germany was a mirror image of American atrocities. This goes unnoticed because those crimes were and still are being committed against black people.
Most recently, journalists Don Lemon and Georgia Fort have been arrested purely for exercising their first amendment rights. Protesters Alex Pretti, Renee Good, and Keith Porter Jr. are some of the few that have lost their lives in the fight. The two former names have ignited a public outcry against the federal government’s actions in deploying Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), along with the National Guard. This new wave of activists may be seen as an emergence of allyship, but much of it is insincere. The same people that are crying out have been silent when the victims were black and brown. Keith Porter has received little to no recognition, and it can’t help but seem like a double standard.

“We have been taken over by the season of ice
Very few people recognise it for what it is
Although they feel uncomfortable
Very few people recognise the fact that somehow the seasons don't change
I mean, you can acclimate it, you can politically acclimate it
You can philosophically acclimate it
You start to, you start to relate everything to the season of ice
And so your dreams become frozen, and your ideas become frozen
Your promises become frozen in this
Frozen days, and frozen nights
Frozen aspirations and frozen inspiration
There's something wrong, I mean, there's something wrong
I mean, there's something wrong, I mean
There's something wrong, I mean
We'd like to talk to you about a season that is taking over America
The season is winter
This song is called, Winter in America”
Gil Scott-Heron
As we continue to navigate this “old normal” let’s remember to give grace to those who may not be able to boycott. The act of protesting is a luxury and now more than ever, people are going through hardships outside of the world’s issues.
